About Sun Prairie BID
History and Nature of Services Provided by the BID
Downtown Sun Prairie continues to act as one of the "community centers" of Sun Prairie and with the development of Cannery Square, is looking forward to continuing to be one of the thriving business districts of the city. Besides numerous commercial and service businesses, the downtown district consists of City Hall, emergency services (police, fire, EMS), utility services, the Historical Library and Museum, the Chamber of Commerce and many buildings of historical significance. Downtown remains an active and viable segment of the city due to the combined presence and importance of all businesses and residential properties.
The BID Committee, made up primarily of property and business owners who volunteer their time, has continued to develop and maintain specific projects that are meant to enhance opportunities for success within the district by attracting businesses, visitors and shoppers to the area.
2010 projects supported by the BID Committee include:
- Develop ongoing advertising and promotional programs including special events for the betterment of the businesses within the district.
- Continue to work closely with the Farmers Market to improve foot traffic in the downtown area.
- Publish the Downtown Merchant Directory and Events brochure for distribution at local businesses, hotels, grocery stores, Wisconsin Visitor Centers and other high traffic areas.
- Follow-up on business and consumer surveys in cooperation with the Sun Prairie Economic Development Coordinator to attract and retain businesses in the Business Improvement District.
- Continue to support ongoing maintenance and upkeep of downtown areas including maintenance of flower pots and walkways, unified dumpster stations, snow removal, street banners and more.
Strategic Initiatives
The BID Committee has identified four key Strategic Initiatives that will be addressed in the immediate future. These initiatives were developed during several Strategic Planning sessions conducted by Bill Rizzo, Ph.D., Community Resource Development Educator with the Dane County UW Extension. The four Strategic Initiatives include:
- Business Recruitment
- Support for Existing Downtown Businesses
- Effective Communication with Key Stakeholders
- Establish a Formal Position on the Issue of the RTA
The BID Committee will use standing sub-committees and other sources to carry out these initiatives.
